Situated mid-point between the Americas, the DR sits 800 miles east of the southern tip of Florida, on the same time zone as New York City.
This is a country of firsts. Situated on the windward side of the island of Hispaniola, the arrival of Columbus on 1492 made it a starting point for the project that gave birth to the Americas. Here the western hemisphere's first university, first church, first hospital and the first overseas royal mint were built.
Since then much of the business that has been done between the north and south of the New World has passed through the Dominican Republic. The country's eight international airports, with two hundred and thirty five scheduled flights to European, North and South American destinations each week, continue the work begun centuries ago.
